Sheila Schuster,

MA, LADC, LPCC, NATC

I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor, and a Board Certified Supervisor in the state of Minnesota. I am a nationally certified Narcissistic Abuse Treatment Clinician and have completed a multitude of trainings including Somatic and Attachment Focused Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (S.A.F.E. EMDR), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy  (DBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CBT), and many more.

My passion for wellness encompasses both mind and body. There are several components of wellbeing: Emotional, Physical, Occupational, Social, Spiritual, Intellectual, Environmental, and Financial. When one of these areas is deficient, it can affect, disrupt, or impair other areas.

My approach is holistic, collaborative, and creative. In both therapy and health coaching, I integrate a synergistic blend of evidence-based practices through a culturally sensitive lens.

With a significant history of experience working with individuals who have survived extremely difficult experiences, such as refugee camps, childhood trauma, time in prison, addiction, serious and persistent mental illness, and domestic abuse, I understand that feeling safe is the priority for my clients.

You have a story, a story that began before you were born and continues to be written. Let me help you begin restructuring the narratives that are keeping you stuck.

Primary Approaches

This type of therapy is best described as a humanistic, goal-oriented, and psychodynamic approach. Holistic approaches consider environment, culture, and client history. This approach helps individuals overcome feelings of insecurity, develop deeper feelings of connectedness, and redirect your striving for significance into more socially beneficial directions.

Adlerian Therapy

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is a brief form of treatment that addresses unhelpful and destructive thoughts by gaining more awareness of thoughts then changing thoughts to create beneficial behaviors. Cognitive Processing Therapy challenges cognitive distortions related to trauma by addressing thoughts that keep individuals stuck. This is done by using Socratic questioning and other strategies that modify the beliefs related to the trauma.

CBT and CPT

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It’s an evidence-based form of psychotherapy designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories using bilateral stimulation. My approach uses a somatic focus. The mind and body are deeply connected. As Bessel van der Kolk says, "The Body Keeps the Score".

EMDR Therapy

Derived from CBT, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is a structured form of therapy that helps individuals struggling with intense emotions that negatively impact behaviors and reactions. The 4 components of DBT include: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness. Therapy includes didactic and homework components that work well with individuals struggle with under-regulating emotions, such as those struggling with anger, self-harm, or other impulsive emotional reactions.

DBT

Begin your path to better health and overall quality of life with a comprehensive consultation that explores your physical, mental, and emotional wellness. Collaboratively create a plan to modify harmful physical health behaviors, improve productivity, reduce life stressors, and create better work-life balance. Wellness consultation is for individuals who desire to explore life purpose, are struggling to follow instructions for medical diagnosis, have difficulty with time management, feel stuck in their career, desire support with nutrition or fitness, want to explore their spirituality, and more. The focus is to improve longevity and wellbeing.

Somatic Therapy

Our body and our mind are connected. Somatic therapy is a holistic approach that seeks to bridge the mind and body. This approach is gently woven into other approaches to help individuals connect with their body. Learn to hear what your body wants you to know and increasingly tolerate automatic stress responses that arise from reminders of previously experienced distressing events. If you are struggling with chronic pain, PTSD, or medical diagnosis, this approach may be helpful.
